Bronze statue of

Large bronze cast of “The Wrestlers”. The original is a Roman marble copy of a Greek bronze now in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. It was discovered in 1583 near Rome and entered the collection of Francesco I de’ Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany. The model was very popular and was constantly reproduced in marble and bronze. The present version is well cast and chased and dates probably from the 18th century and was almost certainly a "Grand Tour" object. [Replaced fastening nuts and bolts. Oxidized spots on surface.]
