Pair Venus and Apollo chenets

Régence ormoulu chenets. The sculptural chenets portray a nude figure of Venus presenting an apple and Apollo playing his lyre. Each is sitting on a shell supported by an eagle and a salamander, possibly symbolizing “Fire” and “Air”. This same unusual iconography is found on the drawing of a bookplate proposed for Madame de Pompadour. Each chenet is raised on a “C”-form plinth decorated with acanthus leaf moldings.
