Fine soft paste Sèvres covered container, either a toilet pot (pot à pommade) or a tobacco pot (pot à tabac.) The cylindrical container has a top centered with an elaborately petaled floral knop. The cover and the rim of the container are decorated with a frieze of alternating blue-ground ovals and red quatrefoil acanthus motifs highlighted in gilding. There are ten of the motifs in each position but of differing sizes to fill perfectly the differing spaces. They are joined by scrolling leafage – gilded palms and green laurel with red berries. At the edges where the top and container meet, lobed borders with gilded decoration on a red ground form a single band between the friezes. Dated – K (1763) Painter’s mark – Louis-Jean Thévenet
