clock 021

Louis XV ormoulu and painted clock. Two pagodes stand on a Boulle work “carpet” on the top of the rectangular base and hold aloft the clock movement; a three-train quarter strike repeater. The barrel is surmounted with a sitting Chinese figure holding an umbrella. [The base probably originally with Boulle marquetry.]

Ex collection : William and “Babe” Paley.

See: Louis XV: Un Moment de perfection de L’Art Français; 1974, # 442, for a clock with identical, but lacquered figures.
