Directoire ormoulu, bronze patiné and silvered bronze mantel clock by Deverberie

Fine Directoire ormoulu, bronze patiné and silvered bronze mantel clock by Deverberie. The clock depicts Leda being kissed by Zeus in the form of a Swan with Cupid looking on. The craggy rockwork is in bronze patiné,   the figures and leaves on the rockwork are bronze doré, and a waterfall and the swan is bronze argenté. It is very unusual to find three different treatments of bronze on the same clock.

 Signed on dial: “Inv(enté) fec(it) DeVerberie & C(ompan)gie."

In a very interesting article in the Cleveland Studies in the History of Art, [Vol. 8 (2003) pp. 170-187] published by The Cleveland Museum of Art, Charlotte Vignon studied the work of Jean-Simon Deverberie. He was one of the most accomplished bronziers of the late 18th and early 19th centuries with examples of his work in many museums and great private collections. She discovered in the library of the French National Institute of Art History (INHA) an illustrated catalogue of thirty-one of his models for clocks dating from the end of the 18th century. The 26th is the Leda model.
