Cressent Clock

Rare Louis XVI ormolu and marble clock with unusually large dial and movement by Léchopié à Paris.  The ormoulu figure of Diana, by Charles Cressent, was probably recycled from the crest of a Régence cartonnier. The unusually large Louis XVI dial was required to follow the arc of Diana’s base. The Diana bronze was probably cast by Jacques Confesseur for Cressent, who had had difficulty with the French guilds over casting his own bronzes. (See the Chicago Art Institute for a pair of bronzes from the lower portion of a cartonnier by Cressent, possibly the same one the Diana came from. There are cartonniers in the Wallace Collection and the Louvre with all three bronzes.)
