Sevres covered cup and saucer

Rare Sèvres covered cup and saucer (gobelet couvert et soucoupe Bouillard), probably part of the 1760 gift to the Palatine Elector Charles Theodore by Louis XV depicting birds and flowers with “mosaic” panels composed of blue and white triangles in gilded trellis work. The cup and the saucer are each decorated with a reserve depicting a bird with outstretched wings in a wooded landscape. The borders consist of panels of the mosaic alternating with paintings of flowers. The top is centered by a floral knop with gilded leaves.

The gift consisted of 222 pieces of decorated porcelain and 54 pieces of biscuit. Some pieces were added “which would be agreeable to the Electrice”. Most of the pieces are dated 1759 and were painted by François-Joseph Aloncle or Etienne Evans.

Dated: “G” – 1759
