Royal Régence carved and gilded small mirror with superb original gilding. The mirror is carved with the King’s crossed “L” monogram at the corners. The crown that surmounted the piece and the royal arms of France and Navarre were probably removed during the Revolution, but the Orders of the Saint-Esprit and Saint-Michel are still seen below the crest. A nearly identical, but regilded mirror is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A drawing of the crest of a seemingly identical mirror is in the Carnet Mathieu Legoupil, a notebook of drawings made at Versailles and around Paris between 1725 and 1735, now in the collection of the Kunstbibliothek, Berlin. The notebook contains various carved motifs and examples of carved furniture that Legoupil, a draftsman and sculptor, found of particular interest.
