Very fine large Roman baroque console table. The vigorously carved console is composed of interwoven C- and S-scrolls, embellished with acanthus flourishes, chains of laurel leaves, and centered by a bibbed face crowned by a long trailing leafy garland hung in swags. The legs are joined by a low stretcher placed as an open pedestal. The console retains its original gilding, burnished and matte, with areas of “chasing” on the frieze to simulate gilded bronze. This type of Roman furniture must have been an inspiration to the Englishman, William Kent. [Small restorations. Replaced campan mélangé marble top.] Exhibited: Life and the Arts in the Baroque Palaces of Rome - Ambiente Barocco: The Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, March 10 thru June 13, 1999. Nº 49.A (Added to the exhibition in place of Nº 49, which had been stolen in Rome.)
